CALLAHAN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MILESTONES
Callahan Neighborhood Association Inc., milestones are a chronological listing of our many community service achievements. Thanks to Miss Georgia Nell Woodley for her vision of a neighborhood association in Callahan to address the needs and concerns of its residents. CNA organized a Youth Committee to create and improve programs for the students enrolled in the Callahan Neighborhood Center’s afterschool programs.
Our goals were to:
✓ Provide academic support
✓ Improve social skills
✓ Build confidence
✓ Encourage physical activities
✓ Create a safe and structured environment
Callahan association members along with a youth participant attended a City of Orlando Leadership Training Institute. After completing the training we started the Georgia Nell Woodley Computer Lab. African dance, after school tutoring, book club, college tours, support for the sport teams, library, and the Saturday Reading Program with Dr. Blair from the University of Central Florida.
Our journey has been long and not without many challenges. We have had many supporters over the years. Attorney Jay Rose, Walt Disney World, the City of Orlando, Commissioners Nap Ford and Daisy Lynum, the Orlando Magic, Tom Fischer, Mayor Glenda Hood for the Mayors Matching Grant Program, Mount Zion Baptist Church volunteers, University of Central Florida, and our many other great business partners.
Personally, I am so very gratefully to have had the opportunities to work with so many parents, coaches, partners, and great students that I still keep in contact with today. Without their support many of these milestones would not have been possible. Thank you all for seven years of wonderful memories.
